“THE BIG SHORT: INSIDE THE DOOMSDAY MACHINE”
Chronicle of the GREAT RECESSION of 2008-2009
Wednesday, March 31, 2010
11:30 Registration Noon-1:30p.m. Luncheon and Program
Michael Lewis, who burst onto the book scene in 1989 with a rollicking insider account of bond trading, revisits Wall Street’s wayward ways in his new book The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, a darkly humorous chronicle of the near free fall of the American economy.
“Michael Lewis’s splendid cast of characters includes villains, a few heroes, and a lot of people who look very, very foolish,” writes his publisher, who goes on to describe The Big Short as a “trenchant, raucous, irresistible narrative.”
His first book, Liar’s Poker, grew out of his experiences as a bond salesman for Salomon Brothers, where he worked after earning an art history degree from Princeton and a master’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics. Sports and business have been the favorite themes of his 13 books.
His other major books include The New New Thing, about Silicon Valley entrepreneurs, Moneyball, about a new breed of baseball executives who proved you can field a winning team on the cheap, and The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game, which follows the life of football prodigy Michael Oher, a virtually homeless African-American teenager taken in by a wealthy white family. It formed the basis of the movie starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Quinton Aaron. Home Game, his most recent book before The Big Short, describes the frustrations and triumphs of becoming a first-time father in middle age.
Lewis will participate in an onstage conversation and take questions from the audience.
A book sale and signing will follow.
Please note: Lewis will only sign books purchased from Brazos Bookstore. The Big Short is offered by presale through Brazos Bookstore at 713-523-0701.
